What are the Requirements for Getting a Private Hire Driver Licence?

While the application process is not as strict as some professions, there are a few certain requirements that you must meet if you want to have a successful application for your Private Hire Taxi Driver Licence.

• All drivers must be at least 21 years of age.
• You must have a criminal record check before getting your PCO licence.
• You must have the right to live and work in the UK.
• You must have a medical with your GP and meet the minimum DVLA Group 2 Standard.
• You must have a detailed understanding of the roads, routes, and side streets of the entire city of London.
• You must pass English language assessment.
• You must hold a full DVLA, Northern Ireland, or other EEA state driving licence that's at least three years old.

How Much Does a PCO Licence Cost?

The entire cost for application and grant of PHV Driver Licence is £310. This is of course subject to change. There are other costs to this as well, including a skills assessment and English language assessment.

The skills assessment is to test your topographical knowledge of London and will include map reading, route selection and a general awareness of the city streets.

An English language assessment applies to all applications for private hire drivers licences received by TfL on, or after, 14 October 2016. This includes applications for both renewal and new licences. Since 14 October 2016, all applicants for a private hire driver's licence have been required to be able to communicate in English to a B1 standard.
